Understanding the Bible – Part 6

So far in our study on getting the Bible from beginning to end we have developed the following ideas:

God is the Eternal King. He is an infinite, unchangeable, Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, goodness, justice, power and love.

From all eternity He exists as the One Living and True God in three persons of one substance, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory.

God’s Kingdom is everlasting. From His throne, through His Son, His eternal Word, God created, upholds, and governs all that exists: the heavenly places, the angelic hosts, the universe, the earth, every living thing and human beings. God created all things very good.

Satan, originally a great good angel rebelled against God, taking a host of angels with him. He was cast out of God’s presence, and, as a usurper of God’s rule established a counter-kingdom of darkness And evil on the earth.

Today we are looking at the fall.

God created mankind in His image, male and female

Genesis 1:27 (NIV)
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

There is something very powerful about God’s image being male and female. I believe this is one of the reasons that marriages are under such constant spiritual attack. There is something about the marriage union, male and female, that reflects the image of God. Since the enemy can’t destroy God, he will try and destroy anything that reflects the image of God.

For relationship with himself and to govern the earth

Genesis 1:26 (NIV)
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

We are created for relationship with the living God, what an amazing gift!

Under the temptation of Satan

Genesis 3:1 (NIV)
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

Revelation 12:9 (NIV)
9 The great dragon was hurled down–that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

Our original parents fell from grace

Genesis 3:8 (NIV)
8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

And we are hiding till this day, covering up our shame with pretense and masks and isolation.

Romans 1:21 (NIV)
21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Romans 5:16 (NIV)
16 Again, the gift of God is not like the result of the one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification.

The temptation of the evil one never changes. Let’s look at a verse that talks about temptation

1 John 2:16 (KJV)
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, pride of life. This is the unchanging ongoing tactic of the evil one. In the Garden….lust of the flesh…good for food. Lust of the eyes…pleasing to the eye. Pride of life…be like God.
Thousands of years later in the desert…lust of the flesh…tell these stones to become bread. Lust of the eyes…all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. Pride of life…if you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. Of course Jesus didn’t sin, we did.

Bringing sin

Romans 5:12 (NIV)
12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned–

And God’s judgment of death to the earth

1 Corinthians 15:22 (NIV)
22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

Through the fall, Satan and his demonic host gained access to God’s good creation

John 8:44 (NIV)
44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

1 John 5:19 (NIV)
19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.

And now we live in a fallen world, a broken planet, with natural disasters, failing bodies, and bad relationships.

Creation now experiences the consequences and effects of Adam’s original sin

Romans 8:20-23 (NIV)
20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

Human beings are born in sin

Psalms 51:5 (NIV)
5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

Subject to God’s judgment of death

Ezekiel 18:4 (NIV)
4 For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son–both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die.

Romans 2:5 (NIV)
5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.

Romans 2:12 (NIV)
12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.

Hebrews 9:27 (NIV)
27 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,

And captive to Satan’s kingdom of darkness

Galatians 1:3-5 (NIV)
3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Galatians 4:8-9 (NIV)
8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods. 9 But now that you know God–or rather are known by God–how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?

Galatians 4:8-9 (NRSV)
8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods. 9 Now, however, that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental spirits? How can you want to be enslaved to them again?

Colossians 1:13 (NIV)
13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,

And that spells out the problem.

So here is where we are now:

God created mankind in His image, male and female, for relationship with himself, and to govern the earth. Under the temptation of Satan our original parents fell from grace bringing sin and God’s judgment of death to the earth. Through the fall, Satan and his demonic host gained access to God’s good creation. Creation now experiences the consequences and effects of Adam’s original sin Human beings are born in sin, subject to God’s judgment of death, and captive to Satan’s kingdom of darkness.

Fortunately, God doesn’t give up on us. We will begin to look at how He makes it possible for us to be restored to relationship with Him. Sometimes I hear people who think that it is narrow thinking that there is only one way to get back to God. That Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and no one gets to the Father except by Him. I am not so amazed that there is only one way, I am amazed that He has made anyway at all. Think about it! Next week we will begin to introduce the law and the covenants.
