In our Online Ministry Bible study today we are continuing our discussion on Understanding the Bible from beginning to end. So far in our study on getting the Bible from beginning to end we have developed the following ideas:

God is the Eternal King. He is an infinite, unchangeable, Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, goodness, justice, power and love.

From all eternity He exists as the One Living and True God in three persons of one substance, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory.

God’s Kingdom is everlasting. From His throne, through His Son, His eternal Word, God created, upholds, and governs all that exists:

Today we are going to pick up the train of thought here and continue our discussion on God’s creation.

The heavenly places

Psalms 89:11 (NIV)
11 The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth; you founded the world and all that is in it.

The angelic hosts

Psalms 103:20-21 (NIV)
20 Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. 21 Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will.

The universe

Colossians 1:16-17 (NIV)
16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

The earth

Psalms 104:5 (NIV)
5 He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved.

Every living thing

Psalms 103:22 (NIV)
22 Praise the LORD, all his works everywhere in his dominion. Praise the LORD, O my soul.

And human beings

Genesis 1:26-28 (NIV)
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

God created us to bear His image. There was a change at the time of the fall that I think is significant. Let’s look at Genesis 5 real quick:

Genesis 5:1-3 (NIV)
1 This is the written account of Adam’s line. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. 2 He created them male and female and blessed them. And when they were created, he called them “man.” 3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth.

Seth was born in the image of Adam! Because of the fall we were no longer image bearers but in Christ we become the image bearers of God again.

1 Corinthians 15:45-49 (NIV)
45 So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. 46 The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. 47 The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. 48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven.

Colossians 3:1-10 (NIV)
1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

God created all things very good

Genesis 1:31 (NIV)
31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning–the sixth day.

Did you ever wonder about that statement? All things very good? What about mosquitoes? I actually looked it up. What purpose do mosquitoes have? They are food for a lot of other things. The larvae feed fish. The adults are food for spiders and frogs and lizards, etc. They do have a purpose. In a fallen world they also spread disease but that wasn’t an issue at the time of creation. There was no disease to spread.

Next week we will introduce the Counterfeit Kingdom. Here is where we are for today:

God is the Eternal King. He is an infinite, unchangeable, Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, goodness, justice, power and love.

From all eternity He exists as the One Living and True God in three persons of one substance, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory.

God’s Kingdom is everlasting. From His throne, through His Son, His eternal Word, God created, upholds, and governs all that exists: the heavenly places, the angelic hosts, the universe, the earth, every living thing and human beings. God created all things very good.
